From the 3rd to the 7th of May an obstetric fistula camp was carried out in the Mary Immaculate hospital of Mapuordit, South Sudan, in partnership with Dr. Tom Raassen, surgeon and fistula expert, and anaesthetist Dr. Mahendeka.
Fourteen women were seen in consultation – seven of them were flown over by MSF and another seven arrived directly to the hospital. Unfortunately less women than expected were able to come, partly due to the start of the rainy season.
Following a medical examination, twelve women were operated on during the week, of which six had already undergone surgery for obstetric fistula. The patients had developed vesico vaginal or recto vaginal fistulas following a prolonged and complicated delivery.
The Mary Immaculate Hospital in Mapuordit is a 100 bed structure with a maternity, surgery and paediatric services. Since last year the hospital has started a training programme for nurses. Currently four doctors, two clinical officers, five registered nurses and twenty-five nurse aids work in the hospital.
From the 18th till the 28th of May Dr. Raassen, in partnership with WAHA International, will be carrying out another fistula camp, this time in Sumbawanga on the shores of lake Tanganyika in Tanzania.
