Dr. Ambaye Wolde Michael is one of WAHA’s fistula surgeons in Ethiopia and arguably one of the best surgeons in the world. With over 20 years of experience she has operated thousands of women with fistula, gaining the experience to deal with complex obstetric fistula and to repair challenging cases.
In line with WAHA’s dedication to promote South-to-South cooperation, Dr. Ambaye went on a mission to Zimbabwe, one of the developing countries with the highest maternal mortality and morbidity rates where cases of obstetric fistula are still occurring. At the Parirenyatwa Group Hospital where Dr. Ambaye intervened from the 8th to the 15th of December, most of the fistula patients had had repeated (up to 6) surgical fistula repair trials, the poor success rate of the operations clearly indicating the shortage of qualified fistula experts.
During her one week mission in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia’s Dr. Ambaye Wolde Michael operated on 8 fistula sufferers awaiting treatment at the Parirenyatwa Group Hospital and shared her experience with local health professionals. Residents and medical students from the surgical department attended lectures and assisted surgical procedures in the operation room.
As exchange of knowledge between developing countries is one of the most optimal and sustainable ways of empowering existing local health staff, WAHA International will continue facilitating cooperation between developing countries in their quest to eradicate obstetric fistula.
