Serbia is positioned at the center of the so called “Balkan migration route” and saw large numbers of refuges passing through its territory before the route was closed in March 2016. However, refugees continue to enter Serbia, often using illegal methods such as smugglers.

Waha’s action

Since September 2015, WAHA’s mission in Serbia has been to provide medical assistance to refugees with a focus on the needs of vulnerable mothers and children. Working in close collaboration with the Serbian government, local NGOs and community organizations, WAHA has been an UNHCR implementing partner for health in 2016.

In support of all refugees in Serbia, WAHA has ensured health services in Southern, Central and Northern Serbia, providing over 25,000 medical consultations. To date, we have primarily treated refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Pakistan. In additional to medical care, we have donated medical supplies and equipment to the health center in Sjenica, western Serbia.

Adasevci Reception Center

Near the Croatian border, the center is the largest in Serbia hosting nearly 2,000 refugees. WAHA provides specialized care for the different needs of the refugee population, including delivering preventative medical consultations. We were particularly active during recent lice outbreaks, providing 24/7 care to refugees during the declared epidemic.

Two mobile health clinics fully equipped with medical supplies and consumables were deployed to ensure access to primary care throughout the target regions.

WAHA supports a reception center for refugees where displaced persons remain following the closing of routes to northern Europe. WAHA organizes humanitarian package distributions, with the support of Etihad Airlines, giving essential items including clothing, hygiene items, school materials, toys, and food parcels. We focus especially on women and children to ensure that they can continue their daily activities including education, with dignity.
