New fistula treatment care and training service at the Assela School of Health

WAHA International and Adama University in Ethiopia inaugurated a new fistula treatment care and training service at the Assela School of Health last week.

The service has 20 available beds to obstetric fistula patients and 20 other beds being repaired (and this will be extended with 40 more beds in the next few months), corresponding to a capacity to treat 45-50 fistula patients every month. It will also enable students in surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology to receive on-the-job training from renowned Ethiopian fistula surgeons Dr Mulu Muleta and Dr Ambaye Michael.  WAHA International is also working on similar projects at two other University Teaching Hospitals in Ethiopia: Gondar University and Jimma University, bringing the total number of women who are operated through Ethiopian university partnerships to 125 per month.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Dean, Vice-President and President of the University, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Health, community women’s groups and several surgeons from WAHA International (Dr Mulu Muleta , Dr Ambaye Michael and Dr Sinan Khaddaj), with the event being extensively covered in the local print media.
