From January 21-25, Dr. Raassen joined the hospital’s four gynecologists to treat women with obstetric fistula, including a girl of 17 and a woman who lived with fistula for over 15 years. He focused on complicated fistula cases, performing operations and training sessions as well as providing supervision.
Dr. Raassen began visiting Mulago Hospital in 2006, making this his 9th trip. Mulago Hospital is the university teaching hospital of Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and with the establishment of a uro-gynecology unit, has become the main referral hospital for many women in the surrounding areas. Since 2005, over 1,000 women have received fistula repair.
Dr. Raassen provides regular support in advanced fistula care to hospitals and health personnel in various countries. He has been working with WAHA International since 2010. Through this collaboration, dozens of women have undergone fistula repair.
