Tanzania: WAHA supports fistula surgery for women in Sumbawanga

In total 40 women were operated by Dr Tom Raassen and Dr Marietta Mahendeka

From April 30 to May 11, Dr Raassen and Dr Mahendeka returned to Sumbawanga regional hospital to continue providing fistula surgery to women with obstetric fistula.

WAHA International has been supporting Dr. Tom Raassen and Dr. Mahendeka’s periodic fistula repair sessions at the Sumbawanga since May 2010.

Situated in the South-West of Tanzania, Sumbawanga is an area with poor infrastructure and few health services for a population of 1,5 million people. Lack of means and few transport facilities make access to hospital level care very difficult.

Our collaborator Dr Thomas Raassen, expert fistula surgeon practicing in Kenya, provides regular support in advanced fistula care to hospitals and health personnel in various countries such as Zambia and Tanzania. This was his 13th working visit to Sumbawanga.

Maternal mortality figures have decreased this past decade in Tanzania, but still one out of 38 women is expected to die during delivery according to the UN latest report.
