International Conference of Midwives from Central & West Africa

The first International Conference of Midwives from French speaking Africa was held in Cotonou, Benin, on the 18th and 19th of May.

Organised by the President of the Midwives Association from Benin and  WAHA International, the conference explored the role of midwives in the prevention of obstetric fistula. It was also the official launch of a campaign to promote the use of Foley Catheters for the early treatment and prevention of obstetric fistula. 

Over 40 participants attended, including the presidents of national midwife associations from thirteen countries across West and Central Africa, representatives from international organisations including UNFPA and WHO, NGOs working in the field of fistula care, prominent fistula surgeons and university professors in medicine.

National midwife associations from Senegal, Gabon, CAR, Mali, Chad, Cameroon, Guinee, Togo, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Republic of Congo, Niger, and Benin were represented.
